What does a growth studio cost compared with hiring an in-house marketer?

The real yearly cost of an in-house marketer in the US, the UK and Nigeria, set against a studio retainer, and when each one wins.

A payslip where the salary line is printed large and the employer's extra costs sit underneath it in a second column the employee never sees, beside a short note that a retainer buys part of several skills instead

TL;DR

A US marketing specialist on the median salary costs an employer about $112,500 a year once benefits are added; a UK marketing executive on £30,000 costs about £34,460. A studio retainer starts far lower but buys part of several people's skills, not a full week. Hire in house when marketing is daily work.

That is the short answer. The long one matters because the two prices are not buying the same thing, and because almost every page on this question is written by an agency that wants the answer to be "outsource". So is this one: Growveloper is a growth studio. I will show you the arithmetic, and the case where hiring your own person is the better buy, including against us.

What does an in-house marketer really cost?

More than the salary. The job ad shows one number. The employer pays a second one the employee never sees: taxes, pension, benefits, and the desk, laptop and software the job needs. We call the distance between the two the payslip gap.

Here it is worked out on one example salary per country, using each country's own published rules.

The yearly cost of one in-house marketer, before a desk, laptop or software

Example salaryWhat the employer addsYearly cost
US: $78,760, the medianBenefits at the national averageAbout $112,500
UK: £30,00015% National Insurance above £5,000, 3% pensionAbout £34,460
Nigeria: ₦250,000 a month10% pension, 1% to the NSITF fundAbout ₦3.33 million
US Bureau of Labor Statistics, May 2025 wages and June 2026 employer costs; gov.uk employer rates for 2026 to 2027 and workplace pension minimums; Prospects marketing executive profile; Nairametrics on the Pension Reform Act 2014; NSITF.

Swap in your own salary and the method still works. The sections below show where each figure comes from.

What does an employer pay on top of salary in the US?

About 43% on top, on average. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics' employer costs release for June 2026 found that private employers spent $46.89 per hour worked on each employee, and that "wages and salaries averaged $32.82 and accounted for 70.0 percent of employer costs." Benefits made up the other 30%.

So divide a salary by 0.7 to see roughly what the job costs. The bureau's handbook page for market research analysts and marketing specialists puts the median wage at $78,760 in May 2025. Divided by 0.7, that is about $112,500 a year. Your benefits may run lighter or heavier than the national average; the method is the point.

What does an employer pay on top of salary in the UK?

National Insurance and a pension, at minimum. Gov.uk's rates and thresholds for employers, 2026 to 2027 set the employer's rate at 15% on pay above a secondary threshold of £5,000 a year. Under automatic enrolment, the minimum an employer pays into a workplace pension is 3%, worked out in most schemes on earnings between £6,240 and £50,270.

For salary, Prospects' marketing executive profile gives "an average of £29,000 to £34,000", and calls its figures "a guide only". Take £30,000. National Insurance on the £25,000 above the threshold is £3,750. The pension on £23,760 of qualifying earnings is £712.80. That makes about £34,460 a year, before holiday cover, a laptop or the tools.

What does an employer pay on top of salary in Nigeria?

A pension contribution and the compensation fund. Under the Pension Reform Act 2014, "employers are required to contribute a minimum of 10% of an employee's monthly emoluments", as Nairametrics reported in July 2026, adding that PenCom intends to raise the rate. The Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund's own services page sets the employer's share at "1% of total monthly payroll".

We found no Nigerian salary survey for marketers that states its sample, so we will not print one. Use ₦250,000 a month as an example and swap in your own offer. Add ₦25,000 for pension and ₦2,500 for the fund, and the job costs ₦277,500 a month, about ₦3.33 million a year.

What does a studio or agency retainer cost?

Ours start at $1,500 a month, $18,000 a year, the figure published on our work page. Other studios and agencies price very differently, and the ranges you will see quoted on agency blogs rarely say where they came from.

What matters more is what the price buys. A retainer is not a person. At that level you are buying a slice of a month: someone who can fix the tracking, someone who can run the ads, someone who can change the site, each for the hours the plan needs. You are buying a calendar, not a person. Our growth marketing page lists what that covers, and says you keep your ad accounts and data if you leave.

Is a growth studio cheaper than hiring a marketer?

In the US and the UK, in cash, usually yes. $18,000 a year is well under the $112,500 above, and well under £34,460. But that comparison flatters the studio. A full time employee gives you around forty hours a week, every week, sitting inside the business. A starting retainer gives you a fraction of that.

In Nigeria, usually no. At any exchange rate above ₦185 to the dollar, $18,000 a year costs more than ₦3.33 million, and the naira has traded far weaker than that for years. If you run a business in Lagos and you need someone posting, replying and selling every day, hire that person. Buy outside help for the parts they cannot do, once, rather than every month.

When should a small business hire in house, and when is a studio better?

Decide by what the work is, then check the price.

Hire, studio or both, by what the work actually is

Your situationThe better buyWhy
Marketing is daily: posts, replies, events, customers in the shopHire in houseBeing there every day is the job
You need a site, ads, tracking and follow up, a few hours eachA studioOne salary rarely buys four skills

You cannot yet say what a customer is worth to youNeither yetWork that out first, or no one can be judged
Our judgement, written to include the cases where a studio, us included, is the wrong buy.

Our comparison of one growth studio against three separate agencies covers the case where you are already paying several suppliers.

Can you have both an in-house marketer and a studio?

Yes, and for many small teams it is the best of the three. I have seen it from the inside. At Baye Business Solutions, a cloud services company in Lagos with about 25 staff, I was the in house developer and marketer for six months. The site had broken links and no analytics at all.

Being inside meant I could sit with the marketing team and teach them to read Google Analytics and Clarity once tracking existed. It also meant one person carried the rebuild, the tracking, the content calendar and the email flows. Hires who can do all of that are rare. Do not expect one salary to buy it; expect your marketer to own the daily work and someone outside to own the technical parts, with one shared monthly report so both answer to the same numbers.

If you want to know which parts you need before you hire anyone, our Growth Audit maps them, or start with a free 30 minute call.

Price the work before you price the people: a whole week of one person, or a slice of several skills.

“A salary buys one person's whole week. A retainer buys a slice of several people's skills. They are different things, and the price only looks comparable.”

Frequently asked

Quick answers to the most common follow-up questions.

In the US, wages were 70.0% of what private employers spent per hour in June 2026, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, so a job costs roughly the salary divided by 0.7. In the UK, add 15% National Insurance on pay above £5,000 and at least 3% pension. In Nigeria, add at least 10% pension and 1% to the NSITF.

In the US and the UK a small retainer is usually cheaper in cash than a full time employee, but it buys far fewer hours. In Nigeria a local hire is usually cheaper than a retainer priced in dollars. Decide by whether the work is daily and single skilled, or occasional and needs several skills.

It depends on the studio. Ours start at $1,500 a month and cover the parts of paid ads, search, tracking, conversion and content that the plan needs, with your ad accounts and data staying in your name. Ask any studio for the hours and the named people behind the retainer.

Usually an executive, someone who does the daily work, with outside help for strategy and the technical parts. The US Bureau of Labor Statistics puts the median wage for marketing managers at $166,790 in May 2025, more than twice the median for marketing specialists.
